Mary and Oliver met on a dance floor in Denver. They were the only two people dancing, backs to each other, until Mary’s friend pushed her right into him. She turned around, and that was it. A night of dancing, drinking, and a lot of laughing turned into the rest of their story.
Years later, Oliver proposed on a snowy night in Bend, at their favorite fireside table at the Suttle Lodge, then walked her out to the lake to see the stars before he got down on one knee.

Mary and Oliver live in Bend, so they wanted their wedding to feel like their home, not a destination. Mary and Oliver didn’t want a set dinner hour with everyone seated in one spot all night. Instead, they set up grazing tables guests could return to whenever they wanted, which is a nod to Mary’s New Orleans roots, where food is often served this way.
It turned their reception into one long cocktail party that slowly became a dance party, which was exactly the vibe they were after. As their photographer, this kind of reception is a dream to shoot. Guests weren’t locked into one seat next to the same people all night, so the candids felt genuinely organic, people actually mingling instead of posing.
The Sunset
Because the entire day happened outdoors, the light kept changing on us in the best way.
We caught golden light coming through the trees for their afternoon portraits, then moved to a different spot on the property for blue hour and got some sweeter, more playful couple’s portraits as the light cooled down.
By the time everyone made it back to the dance floor, the sky over Sunriver Resort looked like it was on fire. It was one of the most striking sunsets I’ve shot, and it happened to land right as the party was hitting its peak.
The Second Line
Mary grew up in New Orleans, and she wanted to bring a piece of that home into her wedding day. So partway through the reception, she and Oliver led their guests around the property in a traditional second line dance, both of them holding umbrellas as everyone followed behind.
It’s a tradition built for exactly this kind of celebration, loud, joyful, and made for moving as a group. With the sky already turning orange behind them, it became one of the standout moments of the whole day.
